THREE MODELS. TWO LOOKS. A WHOLE LOT OF DENIM.
October brought Shaye Boyce, Ava James and Lana Zak into the studio for our Fall Seasonal Beauty Test, with Earl Simpson working his magic on hair and makeup.
We started with soft, luminous beauty portraits against a warm bone backdrop before switching things up with denim, deep blue and a little more attitude.
Same creative direction, three very different personalities, and plenty of beautiful new work for their portfolios.
FIRST UP. CLEAN BEAUTY.
Fresh skin, understated makeup, soft light and a warm bone backdrop.
Clean beauty portraits are an important part of a model's portfolio, particularly for commercial and beauty work, but they're not always easy to come by. There's nowhere to hide behind elaborate styling or dramatic makeup, and that's rather the point.
For Shaye, Ava and Lana, the first look was about creating something simple, polished and versatile. Photographs that could sit comfortably alongside commercial campaigns and beauty work, while still allowing each model's individual features and personality to come through.
THE BLUES. A DENIM STORY.
For the second look, inspiration came from the saturated jewel tones appearing in beauty campaigns this season. Rich, electric blues have been hard to miss, and they seemed like a perfect pairing for denim.
Tone-on-tone colour is something I return to often in my work, and this combination was particularly good. The different washes of denim against the ultramarine backdrop created a rich, layered palette that really pops when you're flipping through a portfolio.
And with Shaye being a barrel racer, a denim story felt especially fitting.
BEHIND THE SCENES.
Between hair and makeup, wardrobe changes and an impressive amount of denim, there was plenty happening around the studio.
With two looks to work through and three models on set, the afternoon was a mix of preparation, experimentation and a little improvisation. Exactly the kind of creative energy that makes these days interesting.
